Who We Are

Bike SAG is founded by longtime cyclist David Lancaster. His first riding event was for the American Diabetes Association, now known as the ADA. Though David had no training at the time, his father promised that he would help him get into racing if he would ride 100 miles for the ADA.

On a heavy Schwinn Varsity with 24 inch wheels, David accomplished that feat with his father alongside. Now dad had to make good on his promise, and David began racing with the Gateway East Freewheelers, in Illinois.

Moving to Florida in 1980, David couldn’t find a team to race with so he rode more as a recreational cyclist, occasionally participating in local charity and group rides. During this period he managed a bike shop and each year drove a SAG wagon for several rides.

He knew how important SAG wagons were on organized rides, but at first he couldn’t come up with a way to financially justify providing the service. Then he heard about a charity ride that, because there was no SAG wagon support, left seven cyclists stranded on the side of the road. He knew something had to be done. This is when he came up with the idea of having sponsors support the rides. He was well aware of the fact that after he had provided his SAG service in the past, it had significantly increased his loyal-customer base at the bike shop. “There’s a hero,” his customers would come in and say. Thus the origin of our motto, “We Make Our Partners Heroes.”
